Marine Bioresource Chemistry

In order to sustain the healthy life of human beings in the 21st century, it is important to establish the new system for effective utilization of bioresources on earth. The sea is composed of the huge capacity of water covering 70% of earth surface area and having the average depth of 3,800 m. In the sea, a numerous species of marine organisms habit. A relatively limited species of marine organisms have been useful so far as food sources for human, but most of marine organisms have still been remained to be exploited as potential resources for our future life. Ecological environment of the sea has the characteristics of higher salt concentration, higher water pressure, lower temperature and closed system of water. The environmental feature should afford the novelty in biological phenomenon, metabolisms and metabolites of marine organisms. Otherwise, organisms originally occurred in the sea and the present marine organisms are phylogenetically classified as lower ones that should have biological phenomenon and materials important basically and universally for living. To clarify both aspects of specific and universal natures of marine organisms is important for effective utilization of marine bioresources.
In our laboratory, basic and applied research projects have been proceeded to exploit the potent marine bioresources as foods, medicines, and fine chemicals by clarifying specific or universal natures of marine organisms.
